2021 was a banner year for NeuroFlow and integrated behavioral health. From company expansion and team growth to new customers and innovative product announcements, it has been beyond rewarding to look around and see a happier and healthier world thanks to our efforts in 2021.
That said, it’s never lost on our team that our mission exists because of the millions of people whose lives are adversely impacted by mental health challenges. Like you, we know and care deeply about friends, co-workers, neighbors, and family members who struggle with their mental health.
It’s in this spirit that we present our year-in-review. Yes, we’re encouraged by all the things we accomplished in 2021, but we’re also more determined than ever to keep going. Our work isn’t done — and it won’t be until every person who needs behavioral health support has prompt, thorough, and compassionate care at their fingertips.
Company expansion and team growth
The year began with the news that NeuroFlow received a $20 million Series B investment led by our strategic partner and customer, Magellan Health, a Fortune 500 behavioral health and employee assistance program provider with decades of experience in the healthcare industry. We rapidly put the capital to use to scale operations and support growth in data analytics, artificial intelligence, and direct health record integrations. The results? We’re pretty darn proud.
We surpassed one-million validated assessments completed, and by year’s end, the NeuroFlow platform had the ability to support 14 million lives across all our contracts and customers in all 50 states.
In addition to company-wide growth, our team exploded from 41 to 86 full-time employees — including our new and esteemed Chief Medical Officer, Tom Zaubler, MD, MPH, in late December 2021.
2021 also saw the implementation of the NeuroFlow Clinical Advisory Board. The panel of healthcare experts will help our team advance the efficacy of technology-enabled behavioral health integration through research and practical application.
Still (and always) customer-obsessed
Sticking to our core values, we’re still (and always will be) customer-obsessed. We can’t get enough of all of our members and partners who journeyed with us for another record-setting growth year. Just a sampling of the press and news from NeuroFlow’s partners include:
- U.S. Air Force: The Air Force is deploying the NeuroFlow platform to support the readiness and resiliency of American airmen, help military members manage stress, and help their care providers detect who is most at-risk.
- Capital BlueCross: Capital BlueCross is bringing NeuroFlow to serve members in its 21-county region in Central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley.
- Prudential: Prudential is harnessing NeuroFlow to help improve outcomes for its disability claimants, helping them return to work more quickly.
- Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic + Independence Blue Cross: Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic and the Independence Blue Cross Foundation is teaming up with NeuroFlow to support its workers’ mental health and prevent burnout in a high-stress work environment.
- Magellan: NeuroFlow’s partnership with Magellan is enabling members to take charge of their own mental health and build confidence and stress-management skills.
- Jefferson Health: Jefferson Health is harnessing NeuroFlow to increase access to behavioral health resources and daily self-care for its 42,000 employees, faculty, and students across Jefferson’s university, clinical, and corporate services settings.

Major product announcements
Building on the foundation laid by our incredibly talented engineers and product teams, we were excited to announce several significant product enhancements during 2021. Here are a few we want to highlight.
1. Launched new registry to support integrated care models
NeuroFlow launched the market-leading cloud-based registry for integrated care, making caseload management for Behavioral Health Care Managers easier and more efficient.
Key features include longitudinal tracking for the entire patient panel across multiple integrated care programs, AI-driven severity filters to drive prioritization within the patient panel, and straightforward time-tracking and documentation, a critical feature for delivering on the Psychiatric Collaborative Care model (CoCM).
2. Expanded Clinical Services
Thanks to the 2021 launch of NeuroFlow’s Clinical Services, thousands of individuals flagged by our peer-reviewed Severity Score have received the timely support they need in the moments that matter.
As individuals engage with health content and assessments via app and website, their care teams can gain insight into how they are doing and monitor their progress over time. NeuroFlow Response Services act as an extension of this care team, to initiate timely interventions if someone is showing signs of needing additional levels of support.
One individual shared how doctors treated her for years for a chronic illness, but she never disclosed she was also having suicidal thoughts. NeuroFlow finally gave her the opportunity and courage to share that information safely. A NeuroFlow Response Coordinator promptly reached out, conducted the appropriate screenings, and connected her to therapy.
We love to share stories like this. Here are a few other things we’ve heard throughout the year:
“This (app) has been a game-changer for me. It has great videos and coping techniques you can learn. It really helps me keep myself organized and together.”
“Love using this app, it helps me get through the day.”
“NeuroFlow has become part of my life!”
3. Added additional exciting dashboard and app features
We’re always looking for ways to improve care team and user engagement. Here are some exciting updates we made in 2021.
For care teams
We know dashboards and reporting are the highest impact features for administrative oversight and measuring success metrics. With that in mind, we rolled out a new and improved dashboard view that displays rolled-up insights for their full populations.
For users
On the user side, we released a massive update to optimize educational content for users, including new videos, journal prompts, mindfulness activities, and more.
Accolades and publications
NeuroFlow was honored to appear on the Digital Health 150. The annual list, compiled by CB Insights, showcases 150 of the world’s most promising digital health startups.
In June, PACT, the Philadelphia Alliance for Capital and Technologies, held their 2021 Enterprise Awards celebrating the Philadelphia region’s technology, healthcare and life sciences innovators and leaders. NeuroFlow was happy to receive PACT’s Healthcare Innovator award.
NeuroFlow also launched the first-ever behavioral health integration readiness assessment, allowing administrators to take a brief assessment and receive an in-depth report card showing their readiness, complete with areas of opportunity specific to their organization.
Rounding out the year, the NeuroFlow team published two new research studies on remote screenings and the use of AI-powered risk stratification in behavioral health care settings. The studies, published in peer-reviewed journals, present a roadmap for executing measurement-based care at scale and highlights solutions to pandemic-era bandwidth limitations in clinical settings.
Tough to top – but we love a challenge
2021 will be a tough year to top, but we’ve never shied away from a challenge, nor have we ever slowed down. And frankly, with more people struggling with mental health than ever, we can’t afford to. With an all-in team, forward-thinking clients, data-driven metrics, and positively-changed lives, we’ve never been more motivated to positively impact the current mental health landscape.
As 2022 gets underway, we’re moving forward with passion, vision, and clarity. If you’re looking to be part of a team like that, we’d love to chat. We’re actively hiring for roles across the company, and invite you to head over to our careers page to view our openings and learn more about what it’s like working at NeuroFlow.
